Jesse Williams hits in the winning run! |
5/1/09 Upset sends Community to final!
Senior Jesse Williams went 3-for-3 Thursday, including a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning, as Community Christian's baseball team upset Wellington Christian 5-4 in a District 13-1A semifinal in Stuart.
With Community trailing 4-3, Patrick Murray walked, took second on a wild pitch and later scored on Chris Lambros' one-out single to center.
Lambros was forced on Josh Ebright's infield grounder for the second out, but Ebright was safe at second on D.J. Pooler's infield grounder. Williams singled to left for the go-ahead run.
Jason VanWoerkom added two RBIs for Community Christian (15-11), which lost to Wellington Christian 3-1 and 4-1 in the regular season.
"Our kids never quit today. They believed they were going to win to the end," Community Christian coach Ric Baldwin said. "They showed a lot of heart today."
Pooler scattered eight hits and struck out 10 — pushing his area-best total to 113 — as the Cougars reached just the third district final in the program's 11-year history.
Community Christian will play host to Trinity Christian at 3 p.m. Friday for the title. Both teams advance to regional quarterfinals next week.
Trinity (22-3) beat Community Christian 10-2 and 16-1 during the regular season.
